If you are replacing the radiator in an E39 540i or M5 and want an all-aluminum option, CSF 7064 adds a 42mm two-row B-Tube core while retaining the factory mounting points and supporting components.

Fitment Note

Check the production date and transmission type before ordering. BMW changed the 540i cooling-system connections during the E39 production run, so some cars require additional parts or a hose fitting.

• 540i built before September 1998: These cars use slip-on radiator hose connections. CSF 7064 uses the later BMW quick-connect design, so the cooling system must be converted using the following BMW parts:
  • Water pump: 11510393336
  • Thermostat housing: 11531436386
  • Overflow tank-to-thermostat hose: 11531711377
  • Lower radiator hose: 11537505229
  • Upper radiator hose: 11537505228
• The later upper radiator hose includes an alternator-cooling branch that is not used on pre-September 1998 cars. This unused branch must be securely capped.
• Automatic 540i built before September 1998: CSF does not call for an automatic-transmission cooler modification, but the early hose conversion listed above still applies.
• Automatic 540i built after September 1998: The factory transmission cooler connects at the left side of the radiator. Replace the left drain plug with an AN6 9/16-18 UNF hose fitting and match the fitting to the inside diameter of the radiator-to-transmission-cooler regulator hose.
• The automatic-transmission hose fitting and early-production retrofit parts are not listed as included with the radiator.

Product Description

The CSF 7064 is built for E39 owners who want an all-aluminum radiator instead of another factory-style replacement. Its 42mm two-row core provides more cooling capacity while the application-specific brackets, connections and mounting points allow the radiator to work with the factory fan shroud and A/C condenser.

CSF forms each B-Tube with an internal center seam, creating two smaller coolant passages inside the same tube. The practical advantage is more tube surface area in contact with the coolant. CSF combines that core design with closely spaced multi-louvered fins to improve heat transfer through the radiator.

On an M5 or later manual 540i, installation follows the factory layout closely. Earlier 540i models and automatic cars need a closer look before parts are ordered, which is why the September 1998 production split and transmission-cooler connection are detailed above.

Installation Notes

• Professional installation is recommended.
• Transfer the factory fan shroud, A/C condenser and related mounting hardware as required.
• Inspect the expansion tank, hoses, thermostat and water pump while the cooling system is drained.
• Automatic 540i owners should confirm the production date and transmission-cooler hose size before beginning installation.
• Refill and bleed the BMW cooling system according to the proper service procedure after installation.

Before You Buy

Do not order this radiator based only on the model year shown on the registration. Check the production-date label on the car and confirm whether it has a manual or automatic transmission. A pre-September 1998 540i requires the later quick-connect cooling-system parts, while a post-September 1998 automatic 540i requires a separate fitting for the transmission cooler.
