Finding the Right Wheel Spacers

Wheel spacers are not universal. Before ordering, confirm the bolt pattern, center bore, spacer thickness and required wheel hardware for your vehicle.

Important fitment details include:

• Center bore
• Spacer thickness
• Hub-centric or non-hub-centric design
• Bolt-on or slip-on installation
• Wheel stud or wheel bolt length
• Lug nut or wheel bolt thread pitch
• Clearance between the factory studs and the back of the wheel

Hub-Centric Wheel Spacers

Hub-centric wheel spacers are designed around the vehicle’s hub bore to help center the wheel during installation. A properly matched hub-centric spacer should fit the vehicle hub and wheel center bore without unwanted movement.

Some thin slip-on spacers may not include a separate hub-centering lip because of their limited thickness. Always review the spacer design and fitment notes before ordering.

Bolt-On vs. Slip-On Wheel Spacers

Slip-on wheel spacers fit between the wheel and factory hub. Depending on spacer thickness and available thread engagement, longer wheel studs or extended wheel bolts may be required.

Bolt-on wheel spacers attach to the factory hub using their own mounting hardware and provide a second set of studs or threaded holes for the wheel. Certain applications may require the factory studs to sit inside relief pockets on the back of the wheel.

The correct design depends on your vehicle, desired spacer thickness and wheel construction.

Choosing a Spacer Size

Measure how far you want the wheel to move outward before selecting a spacer. For example, a 15mm spacer moves that wheel approximately 15mm farther toward the fender.

Check clearance at the front and rear of the vehicle with the suspension loaded and the steering turned in both directions. Moving the wheel outward can reduce fender clearance, so tire size, wheel width, offset, ride height and alignment must all be considered.

Are Wheel Spacers Safe?

Quality wheel spacers are commonly used when they are properly matched to the vehicle and installed with the correct hardware. Incorrect sizing, insufficient thread engagement, improper torque or incompatible wheel designs can create serious fitment and safety problems.

Follow the spacer manufacturer’s installation and torque instructions. Recheck the hardware after the recommended break-in distance and inspect it periodically.
