Aftermarket steering wheels reduce diameter compared to factory wheels -- most performance options run between 300mm and 350mm versus the 370mm to 400mm of most factory wheels. The smaller diameter sharpens steering response and gives drivers more room in the cockpit, which is particularly useful on track cars or tightly packaged interiors. The grips are typically wrapped in suede, alcantara, leather, or natural wood depending on the style, and the spoke counts and shapes vary from classic three-spoke designs to modern flat-bottom racing profiles.

Choosing the right wheel comes down to three decisions: the brand and material that matches your build, the diameter that suits your driving style, and the bolt pattern that matches your hub adapter. MOMO and Sparco use the same 6-bolt 70mm bolt circle pattern. Nardi and Personal use a 6-bolt 74mm pattern with different orientation. These two patterns are not interchangeable, so the steering wheel you choose needs to match the hub adapter you are buying.

What You Need to Install an Aftermarket Steering Wheel

Hub adapter (required)
A hub adapter is a vehicle-specific bracket that bolts to your steering column and provides the mounting surface for your aftermarket wheel. Every car uses a different steering column spline, so hub adapters are not universal -- you need one made specifically for your year, make, and model. Hub adapters are typically sold separately from the steering wheel itself.

Quick release (optional but popular)
A quick release kit installs between the hub adapter and the steering wheel and allows the wheel to be detached in seconds. Popular for track cars where easy exit is important, or for theft deterrence on show cars. Quick releases add approximately 2.5 inches of depth to the steering column, which can bring the wheel closer to the driver depending on the hub setup.

Steering wheel
Choose a wheel whose bolt pattern matches your hub adapter. MOMO and Sparco bolt patterns work on any MOMO/Sparco-compatible hub. Nardi and Personal wheels require a Nardi-compatible hub or a cross-pattern adapter spacer.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a hub adapter for an aftermarket steering wheel?
Yes, always. Aftermarket steering wheels are universal in that they will physically fit any car, but they cannot bolt directly to your steering column without a vehicle-specific hub adapter. The hub adapter bolts to your steering column and provides the correct bolt pattern for the steering wheel to attach to. Hub adapters are sold separately and are specific to your year, make, and model.

What is the difference between MOMO and Nardi bolt patterns?
MOMO and Sparco use a 6-bolt 70mm bolt circle pattern with holes at 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock orientation. Nardi and Personal use a 6-bolt 74mm bolt circle with holes at 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock orientation. These two patterns are not cross-compatible. Make sure your steering wheel and hub adapter use the same bolt pattern, or purchase a Nardi-to-MOMO adapter spacer if you want to mix patterns.

What size aftermarket steering wheel should I get?
Most performance and track-oriented buyers choose between 320mm and 350mm. Smaller diameters give quicker steering response and more cockpit room but require more input effort. 350mm is the most popular size as it gives most drivers enough leverage to feel comfortable while still being noticeably smaller than a factory wheel. Wheels in the 330mm to 340mm range sit between the two and are popular on cars where column position makes a smaller wheel feel awkward.

What material should I choose for a steering wheel grip?
Suede and alcantara offer the best dry grip and a premium tactile feel, making them the most popular choice for track and performance use. They absorb moisture rather than becoming slippery, which is an advantage during spirited driving. Leather is a good all-around choice for cars that also see daily use -- it's durable, looks clean, and cleans easily. Natural wood is popular on classic builds and show cars for its vintage aesthetic.

Will an aftermarket steering wheel disable my airbag?
Yes. Installing an aftermarket steering wheel removes your factory airbag, which will trigger an airbag warning light on most cars. This is a safety consideration to be aware of before purchasing. Some buyers install a resistor or airbag simulator to suppress the warning light. If your car is a daily driver with passengers, this is worth factoring into your decision before purchasing an aftermarket wheel.

What brands of aftermarket steering wheels does Redline360 carry?
Redline360 carries steering wheels from MOMO, Nardi, Sparco, OMP, Personal, and other leading brands. Owner reviews of all four Italian brands -- MOMO, Nardi, Sparco, and OMP -- are consistently strong, and the choice between them typically comes down to aesthetics and the specific wheel design rather than a meaningful quality difference between brands.
