It works fine in normal conditions but heat soaks under sustained load — towing, trail driving in high ambient temperatures, or back-to-back hard pulls. The SXTH replaces it with a front-mount bar-and-plate core that sits in the grille opening and gets direct airflow rather than sitting above the engine soaking up heat. The 16% volume increase and the 50% reduction in pressure drop are meaningful numbers, and the 15.5 HP and 14.4 lb-ft gains on a stock Tacoma SR5 are from a controlled dyno session with the intercooler isolated as the only variable.
